Group meetings are always only with your group, moderated by your Group Tutor. Here you can continue the conversation about the topics discussed in the Small Session prior to this meeting. Sometimes an additional expert is invited to join the Group meeting.

Plenary Session: Sales & Distribution with Aleksandar Govedarica, moderated by Cecilia Lidin

Aleksandar Govedarica (Syndicado Film Sales) will provide insight into his sales and distribution expertise. Discover their approach and secrets for getting a film out into the world. What is the best strategy for the different windows, and how do you decide which steps suit best for which film? How does the current situation worldwide influence these windows and strategies? Learn at what stage of the process a sales agent or distributor joins the team and what you can expect in a collaboration.

Aleksandar Govedarica

Aleksandar Govedarica was born 1987 in Sarajevo, graduate of University of East Sarajevo as well as Vancouver Film School. He started working as a film programmer at Kriterion Sarajevo, the only art house cinema in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Aleksandar was part of the organizing committee of the Serbian Film Festival in Vancouver. With three years of previous experience in sales and distribution, Aleksandar runs the Toronto based world sales and production company Syndicado. He produced two documentary films and has experience in all aspects of filmmaking including directing. Aleksandar is tutoring at workshops like Women Doc Circle, Baltic Sea Docs and Duna Dock.

Cecilia Lidin

With a background in film studies at the University of Copenhagen and UC Berkeley, finalized with a thesis on documentary film and ethics - Cecilia Lidin has for the past 20+ years worked with the development and financing of documentaries in different capacities. As loans officer in the first MEDIA programmes off ice documentary, followed by promoting Nordic shorts and documentaries at Filmkontakt Nord and at the European Documentary Network responsible for a number of the many co-production workshops around Europe working as tutor as well as moderator for pitching events. In 2009 Cecilia Lidin took over as Head of EDN together with Hanne Skjødt, a position she held until she left to become Film Commissioner for Documentaries at the Swedish Film Institute in 2011 where she was until 2015. Cecilia Lidin is at present Film Commissioner for Documentaries at the Danish Film Institute.

EXPERTS GROUP 1

Lina Dinkla

Lina Dinkla studied cultural studies and communication and media science in Leipzig (MA). She has worked as a film author for various magazines and in different positions at international film festivals (including Berlinale Talent Campus, Short Film Festival Hamburg, Crossing Europe Linz, Film Festival Cottbus). Since 2009 she has been programme coordinator at DOK Leipzig and since 2020 she is a member of the selection committee. She also curates film programmes for various institutions and festivals.

Gabor Greiner

After his studies of Cultural Management in Vienna, Birmingham and Chicago, Gabor GREINER worked as a journalist and film critic. In 2003, he moved to Brussels to take charge of the distribution support department of the MEDIA Program at the European Commission’s Film Fund. In 2009, Gabor became acquisitions executive at the international sales agent, The Match Factory. In August 2010, Gabor moved to Berlin to take over acquisitions of the French-German sales company, Films Boutique, winner of the Golden Bear in 2017 and 2020 and the Golden Lion in 2011 and 2016. Gabor is a member of the European Film Academy.

EXPERTS GROUP 2

Robin Smith

Robin Smith is currently the CEO of Blue Ice Docs Inc. – a distribution and equity funding company dedicated to funding, acquiring and distributing the best non-fiction work from around the world and is also the Head of Factual Content for levelFILMS – a multi-facet distribution company based in Toronto, Canada. Robin brings a strong background of over 25 years of film, video and arts-related work to the marketplace having worked at a variety of distribution companies including The National Film Board of Canada, Alliance Films, Lions Gate Film Entertainment, Seville Pictures and Capri Releasing and has managed and navigated the release of such hits as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, All About My Mother, Away from Her, Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Blackfish and the recent hit Kedi. Robin has also acted as Executive Producer on a variety of award-winning documentaries including the Oscar-nominated Abacus: Small Enough to Jail (dir: Steve James), the Emmy-Award winning Solitary (dir: Kristi Jacobson), the Emmy-Award winning Advocate (dir: Rachel Leah Jones, Philippe Bellaiche) and the soon-to-be-released feature A Glitch in the Matrix (dir: Rodney Asher). Robin also acts as the Cinema Programmer for the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema in Toronto that is operated by the Hot Docs International Documentary Festival. The Hot Docs Cinema Ted Rogers Cinema is a 700 seat cinema dedicated to screening documentaries throughout the year.

Rodolfo Castillo Morales

Mexican programmer and filmmaker, has participated in several fiction and short films as well as in feature documentary films as writer, director, cinematographer and editor, for commissioned television series documentaries for broadcasters in Mexico, Spain, USA and Japan, as well as participated on creative features films. He was the programmer at DocsMX as well as the general coordinator for DocsLab until 2018. Currently he's the Documentary Programming Director of Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG), the largest and most important film festival in Latin-America, as well as general coordinator of DocuLab: Documentary Laboratory of FICG. He's postproducing his second feature and pre-producing his third film as director and producer.
